Ruth:A Closer Redeemer

As we open the Book of Ruth, we find ourselves in a troubling era in the history of Israel. Set during the days of the judges, it was a time when the people of God had largely turned away from Him; a period characterized by the moral and spiritual decay of God's people.

This is the dark backdrop against which the events of Ruth took place. As such, the short book serves as a sharp and deliberate contrast to the Book of Judges, offering an alternate vision and deep hope for Christ followers today.

On its surface, it's a beautifully simple story of three individuals making their way through everyday life - a story of tragedies faced, of choices made, and of loyalties forged. Yet when considered more deeply, the book encapsulates in miniature the entire narrative of Scripture, providing a picture of a people in desperate need of redemption and of a God both willing and able to bring it about.

As we journey through the pages of this book, we can expect that God will use the stories of Ruth, Naomi and Boaz to help us make sense of our own stories. More than anything, we can expect that God will use this book to beckon us to draw near to Him - just as He has drawn near to us - through Jesus Christ, our closer redeemer.
